The Genius of Design

In creative thinking classes ,  Mr.Tham show us some of the "The Genius of Design" series in the class . 

From my understanding , The Genius of Design contain 5 series which is 

1.Ghost in the Machine

2.Design for Living

3.Blueprints for War

4.Better Living through Chemistry 

5.Objects of Desire

Series number 1 is about a guy name Willam Morris which discover many thing that can be use in the industry . For example sheep shears . I can't remember the name of some of the legendary designer at the past . I managed to search some of the legendary designer at the past which is Dieter Rams and J Mays . I remember one sentence that one of the designer saying that " Design should be as discreet as an English butler "

From this series 1 , there is some question I want to ask and discover by myself . 

-What distinguishes a good design from bad design in consumer product ?

-Henry Ford make me think of one question which is how does design show your personality ? Let's say you have a car , how does the design of the car express your value or personality ? 

Sheep Shears 

Series number 2 is about the born of the fitted kitchen and tubular steel furniture . It's start to step into the modern movement .This series talking about kitchen in your home as " the machine for living " .

Question that I have to think is :

-Are design affect what you cook ? or the way you cook ? 

-How does the design in kitchen express ? Is it good for you lifestyle or bad to you ?

Series number 3 is about world war II . Many designer create some of the war machine such as Sten gun to protect their nation .The British Sten gun was designed as cheap , easy to manufacture ,and a very strong weapon .

So , how was the design of public service influenced you ?

Series number 4 is about chemistry. Chemistry start to step into designer world around 50s and 60s . The design of Braun product has earned praise for it logic , simplicity, and minimalist approach ."I don't mind so much about what the public wants ," says Italian designer Alberto Alessi.

Question :

-Does design of Braun product (the style) appeal to you ? Why or why not ? What are the downsides of minimalism?

-What do you think of the statement that Alberto Alessi said ?

-How has the personal-electronics revolution spawned by the trasistor radio enabled individuals to create their own environment and contributed to a sense of isolation ? In what ways have electronics done just the oppsite and encouraged opportunities for socializing ?

Series number 5 is about object which consumer or everyone wants . Designer played a importance roles which can change the whole world !In the 60s and 70s , record album covers became more than mere packaging . Designer turned them into works of art .In the 1990s , the entertainment industry abondoned so-called "longboxes" for CDs,DVDs , and video games for economial and environmental reaasons .
